Chipping in

Where does my money go?

Straight from your bank to the supplier, with the bill's own reference. Bill Pal never holds it, and the person you help never sees your name.

How much do I have to give?

Whatever you can spare. You can pick £5, £10 or £20, or clear what's left on the bill. There's no subscription and nothing to top up.

Is it a loan?

No. A chip-in is a gift towards someone else's bill. Nobody pays it back.

I chipped in by mistake. Can I get it back?

Once your bank has sent a payment it can't be taken back through Bill Pal, because it's already with the supplier. Message us and we'll help where we can.

Will the person know it was me?

No. They see "a Bill Pal member" or your town, never your name.

Posting a bill

What bills can I post?

Electricity, gas, water and broadband bills from UK suppliers on our list. The bill must be real, in your name or one you're responsible for paying, and unchanged.

How long until my bill is live?

Bill Pal hasn't launched yet, so bills posted now are checked and stay pending until launch day. After launch it's usually less than a day. You'll get a notification when it's live, and each time someone chips in.

What do people see about me?

Your first name, town, household size, your note, the supplier, the amounts and the last four characters of your reference. Never your surname, address, email, full reference or the photo of your bill.

Can I post more than one bill?

You can have one open bill at a time. When it's covered or taken down, you can post another.

How does the money reach my account?

Every chip-in is paid by the helper's bank straight to your supplier, using your bill's reference. It comes off what you owe, the same as if you'd paid it yourself.

Safety and your data

How do you check bills are real?

Every bill is checked against its photo and the supplier before it goes live. We only ever pay into a supplier's own account from our checked list, never bank details from a photo.

Does Bill Pal hold my money?

Never. There's no wallet or balance. Payments go through Open Banking by a regulated payment provider, and you approve each one in your own banking app.

What do you do with my information?

We only use it to run Bill Pal. We never sell it or use it for advertising. Our privacy notice has the full details.

How do I delete my account?

In the app, go to Me, then Delete account. It takes down any open bill and removes your email and name.

The beta

How do I get Bill Pal?

Bill Pal is in beta on iPhone. Sign up on the home page and you'll get the install link straight away. It installs through Apple's free TestFlight app.

What can I do in the beta right now?

Sign up, set up your profile and post your bill. Chipping in, and real payments to suppliers, switch on at launch.

Is there an Android version?

Not yet. We're starting on iPhone. Sign up and we'll let you know when Android is on the way.

Is Bill Pal a charity?

No. Bill Pal is built by DH Website Services, a trading name of David Hooper Home Limited, in Pontypridd. It isn't a charity, a lender or a bank.
